Orton-Gillingham (O-G) Associate Level Teacher Professional Development

Dates: June 17 - 28, 2013

Time: 8:00 am - 4:45 pm (Monday - Thursday) and 8:00 am - 1:00 pm (Friday)

Location: Hawai'i Technology Academy, 94-810 Maloalo Street, Waipahu, Oahu

Fee: $775 (HIDA member)*; $950 (non-member)

Description: The context of the course will follow the suggested curriculum outline recommended by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE)at the Associate Level. This course will complete the 70 hours of required coursework. Priority in registering for this course is given to classroom educators.

Instructional Topics:

  • philosophy of multisensory language instruction
  • the nature & needs of the dyslexic learner
  • awareness of formal & informal assessment instruments
  • history & structure of the English language
  • current research in dyslexia & the science of reading
  • developing student learning profiles
  • lesson planning & progress monitoring
  • handwriting
  • integrating MSL instruction into response to intervention
  • MSL lesson planning & common core standards

    Students Needed for Free Tutoring

    As part of the June 17-28, 2013 Orton-Gillingham Associate Level course, HIDA is offering free one-to-one tutoring. To apply, students must meet all of the following minimum requirements:

  • struggle with reading and spelling
  • will be entering 1st - 8th grade in the 2012-2013 school year
  • qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program

  • Other important information:
  • The tutoring will be provided by teachers participating in the June 2013 Orton-Gillingham (O-G) Associate Level course.
  • Students approved to receive the tutoring will meet with their assigned teacher for one hour each day from July 24-28, 2013 at the site of the O-G course, Hawai'i Technology Academy in Waipahu.
  • Space is limited. Not all applicants will be approved to receive tutoring. Apply by May 31, 2013.
